Beyond Art

Exploring yourself (and others) through the Creative Process

Measurable Outcomes

Pilot Study Results/Objective:
The classes in this book were designed to help the student to connect with themselves and others more authentically, in order to discover that every student has hopes and dreams just like they do.

There were 18 students who came consistently to the Diorama Art Classes in June and July of 2017. Each student was asked to fill out a questionnaire at the beginning of each class regarding DIVERSITY in their own lives, then again, after the last class was over.
In that final lesson every student shared their art work as well as their hopes and dreams. They answered questions and listened to comments from other class members. This time of engaging is the exact moment when the walls loosen and some even come down. When every student understands that we are all “human” an appreciation for their classmates begin.  After the dialogue—when the students were most vulnerable—the last questionnaire was handed out to complete.

The results  were significant in all the areas that we documented:
#1.)  Being comfortable with differences= up from 6 to 9……………… 17%

#2.)  Inviting different Cultures into their home= up from 5 to 8…… 17%
         with  Disabilities=up from 8 to 10…………………………….…………….. 12%
         with those who are LGBTQ=up from 4 to 7……………………….…… 17%

#3.)  Stop a bullying= up from 7 to 9……………………………..…….….…..… 12%
#4.)  Has art class helped you to relate=up from 6 to 9.5………………. 20%

This is Tamlin’s 3rd pilot study to enhance well-being through the creative process:
1.) Eating Disorders in 2005, self-esteem up 41%;
2.) Veterans in 2016, positive thoughts up 49%;  and now,
3.) Diversity in 2017, compassion up 20%.

What does this tell you about the Art with a Purpose curriculums?
